Ice storm

Well we got hit with a ice storm here in Birmingham. It was sleet then rain that froze at my home and my car got covered in nice thin sheet of ice. It made for some interesting photos out of the car window.

Smoke

Not to long ago I saw an image that really struck me as cool and unusual. It was of smoke. But with its unique and cool shape it looked almost painted. I never looked at anything burning that put out smoke the same way again. Some awesomely cool things occur in nature, but many times we don't notice them. Well I then set out to learn how to create some smoke images myself. After much searching, some reading and much playing with techniques, I finally got some very cool results. Here are a few.

F16's landing at Birmingham Airport

Well a college buddy had posted something on his facebook about an event that intrigued me. He mentioned that a high school friend of his would be flying into the airport and doing a couple flyby's before they landed. His buddy is a F16 pilot, and then after the landing the guests got to go out and see the plane up close. He had been doing this for a few years during the summer, when many of his graduating classmate had an annual get together. Well never having been to an airshow or such, I figured it would be interesting to go and see if I could get any interesting photos of the planes in flight. Well got many photos, and many came out well, but on I believe the last pass before landing one of the F16's banked right and pretty much was in a sharp turn almost directly overhead and with my telephoto lens I pretty much filled the frame with the plane. These photos are not cropped from a larger original this is basically the image straight from the camera. Yeah they were pretty close. Unfortunately displaying them at this size just doesn't do them justice, but full size on a nice 32" screen is pretty awesome.

It was very cool, and a little loud from the jet engine's roar.

Random stuff

I was gonna challenge myself to post more here, not of family or such but some random, but interesting shots. So here is one to start off with.

No I am not a smoker, I was visiting with a neighbor and they smoke so I thought the randomness of how the cigarettes are laying in the bucket was cool in an artistic kinda way.

Well anyway I was working the last night and testing the camera and took a few funny photos. Just thought I would share.

Normal

Funny

Just strange.

I was at a Luau party and most everybody was into the theme and a few people had some really funny things like these glasses. Not sure why I had them but oh well.

Falling way behind

I know I have fallen way behind on this blog but I will be posting some new stuff soon. I have just been busy and since this is place I share more personal stuff to keep my website with a more professional feel, its ok that I have fallen behind, life happens. But look back for post, because I will date them according to when they happened not when I actually posted them, so occasionally I may find old pictures etc and post them.

Memorial Day trip to SGI

Well I headed down to St George Island, FL for the Memorial Day weekend holiday. This trip I got to go up into the finished lighthouse. Sometime in 2005 the lighthouse, which used to be located on Little St George Island, collapsed. Not long after an effort began to salvage the remains, with a plan to rebuild the lighthouse on the main island so all could enjoy. Little St George is only accessible by boat, so a very small percentage of people that had visited the main island had ever seen it in person. Well since Dennis,a close friend of me and my father, was one of the organizers of the group, and dad not having much free time to help salvage the remains from Little St George, or to help chip off mortar from the recovered bricks, he purchase a tool that they needed.

So after having gotten regular updates about the lighthouse progress, from the salvage to the work chipping the brick, etc I was finally able to check out the completed lighthouse. I also happened to see Dennis while I was there and got a peek inside the Keeper's House. The outside was compete but inside was pretty much just framed, but they did have the AC hooked up and working, it was nice and cool inside.

For more info on the lighthouse, here is the link to the wikipedia page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cape_St._George_Light
and here is a link to the St George Lighthouse Association
http://www.stgeorgelight.org/

Anyway here are a few photos

The SGI Lighthouse

The view north from the lighthouse. You can see the bridge across Apalachicola Bay in the distance.

The view west from the lighthouse.

The view east from the lighthouse.

I didn't take a shot from the view to the south, mainly because all you could see was some beach and the ocean, not to interesting.

Sunset one evening

Another day another beautiful sunset

Trip to Fort Morgan

Got to make a trip down to Fort Morgan, AL and to stay at the Beach Club (www.beachclubal.com) for a few days. My sister had planned the trip while my mom was visiting them in Louisiana. Got to see my favorite niece, and she is always entertaining and I always try and get a few good pictures of her.

Also got to take some time to actually go see the fort that the area is named after. Very interesting location.

St George Island, FL July 4th

Was on St. George Island, FL for the July 4th weekend. The weather was nice but hot.

A close view of our neighbors dock from our house.

A collection of old cars and trucks in a field, not on the island but close.

A view of the sunset from below "The Oar House" at ground level.

The sunrise along the Apalachicola Bay.

Just before the sunrise, from the bridge to St George Island. Part of the old bridge that is now a fishing pier is seen on the lower left.

Another beautiful sunset from "The Oar House" on St. George Island, FL.

A sunrise along the bayside of St George Island, FL with some oyster boats in the foreground.
